Community Update: Feral Hog Concerns

The City of Caldwell is aware of residents' concerns regarding the increasing presence of feral hogs within and around city limits. Feral hogs can cause significant damage to public and private property, parks, drainage areas, landscaping, and infrastructure, and they present potential safety concerns for residents and motorists.

As a municipality, the City's options are more limited than many people realize. While Texas law allows for the removal of feral hogs, the City must also comply with public safety requirements, local ordinances, and state regulations regarding wildlife control, firearm discharge, and the transportation of live feral swine.

What the City Can Do:

  • Evaluate and implement trapping and removal programs on City-owned property.
  • Work with qualified wildlife management professionals and governmental partners to reduce feral hog populations.
  • Coordinate with neighboring landowners and agencies to develop long-term solutions.
  • Monitor areas where hog activity has been reported and assess impacts to public infrastructure and property.

What the City Cannot Do:

  • Conduct unrestricted hunting or firearm operations throughout the city without regard to public safety and local regulations.
  • Enter private property and remove hogs without permission or legal authority.
  • Relocate live feral hogs except as allowed under state law and applicable regulations.

The City is currently reviewing all available and legally permissible options to address this issue. Staff will continue researching best practices, consulting with wildlife management professionals, and evaluating potential solutions that balance effectiveness, public safety, and fiscal responsibility.

We appreciate the community's patience as we work through this complex issue and will provide updates as additional information becomes available.
